YOU ASKED FOR THEM!!..ISLAND JIU-JITSU T-SHIRTS

Okay, so we are a bit hardcore (some say a bit "nerdy") when it comes to our jiu-jitsu club's outdoor facility and our 5 days a week training regimen. However, this proved to be effective for club members at the most recent tournament (NAGA HAWAII)

So when we brainstormed different ideas regarding a club logo, we knew we wanted something that expressed our lifestyle as well as our addiction to jiu-jitsu.

Upon feedback from our family, friends, and fans we have decided to make these shirts available to all supporters and lovers of the art.

NO POLITICS WITH THESE SHIRTS!..THEY ARE MEANT TO BE ROCKED BY LOVERS OF THE OCEAN, THE ISLANDS, AND THE GENTLE ART!!!

$20 +$5 shipping per shirt

How To Order:

Email me at islandjiujitsu@gmail.com and include the following information:
  • Quantity
  • Men's or Women's
  • Size: XL, L, M, S
  • Mailing Address
T-Shirts are $20 each plus $5 shipping per shirt. If you are purchasing more than 3 shirts, the shipping charge will be reduced.

Jason Vigil NAGA HAWAII

This was my first match of the day after coaching like a crazy maniac. No-gi advanced (purple belt and above)..boy was super strong, however I managed to get the take down in the final seconds to secure the win..lucky!!!

This was my second fight of the day. My opponent, super tough brown belt from Kauai, definitely did well in this match. We actually fought again in the purple belt gi finals..Now that was a fight for the highlight reel!!..(thanks Sirrus)

This was the final...gotta hand it to this guy for making the final..he was like 140 lbs..tried to make it quick. You can actually see the guy I beat in the previous match talking shit after I take this guy down with the double-leg. He said, "don't worry he just gonna hold you from there," and you can see me talking shit back as I mounted him. "Nah, Im just gonna mount him before I submit him!"...and then I triangled him from there!!...Now on to the gi division!!!

After the no-gi division I went outside for a little JAH and lost track of time. When out of the blue Tammy told me I was up!..I ran and grabbed my gi and jumped on the mat. Yeah, I was kinda winded but didnt plan on footlocking the guy. Heres how it went...

This fight was tough!..I won by a sweep. Thats it. I didnt feel as if I slammed him, however in the middle of a jiu-jitsu fight alot can happen. Sure to see you again Thomas...

This was for the samurai sword!...My opponent Sirrah is a brown belt on Kauai. First off, let me just say that he was kicking my ass in the beginning like it was his job! And..then I was able to escape his back attack, got too high on my guard pass attempt and got swept!..Lucky for me I was able to slap a triangle on him and cinch it down for the win!!!...Again, my hat is off to my opponent...great technique..gonna come and surf Kauai to train with him again!!!..Aloha n Armbars!!!

All in all the tournament was insane! Gracie Kailua won like 13 samurai swords and Island Jiu-jitsu brought home a few as well, yeah?...ALOHA (gotta go surf!)

Mr. Deeds Sweep ( Very very sneaky!)

This is a variation I use when my opponent is attempting to stand and back out of my guard. Heel control is key here and watch out for the footlock (flying toe-hold)

Gracie Barra legend Marcio Simas showed me this years back and I have come to use this sweep in my everyday game..DRILL IT!!!

Haole Boy Can Scrap!!!

I have been watching Jeff Glover for years now. However, I do not recall ever seeing this compilation of his fights! This guy's half- guard is ridiculous! Another great display of the strengths of Gracie Jiu- jitsu. If this does not get everyone ready for the NAGA tournament....CHECK DA PULSE!!!

ABU DHABI 09

Evereyone needs to give their standing ovation to Braulio Estima. He absolutely killed it at the ADCC this year! Having always been my favorite grappler, I was super- stoked to see him wreck everyone effortlessly...Now get over here and train with us in Hawaii Braulio!!!

Knee-bar from the guard

After causing your opponent trouble from your guard while attempting to pass from his/her knees, another great way to pass is the standing method. While this can be very effective, it can also be countered with a leglock if done correctly and tightly. Once an opponent is hesitant to use the standing pass, one can go back and forth between different attacks from the guard..DRILL IT..ALOHA!

Island Jiu-jitsu's Video Favorites

This is a highlight video of Rubens Charles (an absolute bad-ass). His style is super technical and tournament oriented. I would love to see him venture into the MMA world as some of his fellow competitors have.(Andre Galvao, Roger Gracie, and Demian Maia to mention a few)..One has to appreciate the beauty of our chosen art when executed with this level of precision..Stay tuned for more vids and discussions. Also, feel free to check out our fanpage on Facebook and Islandjits on Youtube..GO TRAIN..ALOHA!

Promotion Night : Gracie Kailua

Last night at class (GRACIE KAILUA) there were well-deserved promotions given by my insructor and friend Jason Izaguirre (Royler Gracie black belt). A solid number of blue belts were given, as well as degrees on both white and blue belts. In addition, I recieved a degree on my purple belt. But the highlight of the evening definetly went to Daniel Espinoza who got his brown belt! He is well worthy of it (yeah D)

Andre Galvao...the next Rickson??

When thinking of Gracie Jiu-jitsu dominating in mixed martial arts, one can think back to the days of Royce Gracie in the UFC. As well as the UNDEFEATED RICKSON GRACIE throughout his fighting career in Japan and on the mats of the world. Since then, there have been many practitioners that have proven the effectiveness of this discipline.

Another great example would be local boy and "Phenom" BJ PENN! However, after viewing this fight between Andre Galvao and John Alessio I feel as if we are embarking on another one of those special rides. Alessio, who is an excellent striker with solid wrestling and definetly training jiu-jitsu, was to be a gnarly test for the brazilian jiu-jitsu world champion.

What really got me stoked was the fact that I've been watching this guy the past few years in the Pan-American Championships, the Worlds, and every 101 Submissions video to date. This clip is the second half of the fight, and to see the first half simply check it on youtube. The first minutes involved them feeling each other out on their feet, but that didn't last too long as Galvao positions himself behind Alessio as he wanted to hold the ropes.

Starting with this clip you will see a perfect display of jiu-jitsu finishing a well seasoned opponent...I thought for sure he was gonna choke him from the body triangle..TOP LEVEL AS IT GETS!!

Arm-lock to Triangle choke set-up

This short video basically describes how one can transition from a failed arm-lock to a triangle... or simply how to set your opponent up for failure:) The details here are to have the proper ankle on bottom during the transition into triangle, and achieving the desired angle to finish da choke!

2009 PACIFIC SUBMISSION GRAPPLING CHAMPIONSHIPS

The PAC SUB jiu-jitsu tournament was this weekend in beautiful Hawaii! Over 1000 people in attendance, this event hosted the best from the islands, California, and other global locations. There were appearances by Jason "Mayhem" Miller, Clay "The Carpenter", and Kendall Grove. Super-stoked that my instructor Jason Izaguirre was there to coach all of us. This was my first tournament fight as a purple belt. In my first match, I hit the Houdini Flip (see Houdini Flip instructional) with less than a minute left to take his back and secure a choke...Aloha...DRILL IT!!!

This match below was for 3rd place...I had just been submitted in the previous fight via toehold (a gnarly one!)...Another tough Relson student who liked to go hard!...However, I was able to play my game and submitted him with an arm-lock from the guard...ALOHA

This was a little intermission/treat for the spectators (and competitors). A ring girl bikini contest to raise an already insane testosterone level!!! ENJOY!!!!!!!!!!!!

Drop- Guillotine

This is a great variation of the guillotine choke. This submission can be applied from a sprawl in response to a takedown attempt, or when an opponent is in turtle... Also, can be performed with or without the gi!!... DRILL IT!!

HOUDINI FLIP (clip 1 of 2)

Training at B.J. Penn Academy this weekend!!

Yeah guys...spent this weekend in Hilo on the BIG ISLAND of Hawaii!! It's just a comical 60 minute flight from here in Honolulu. Initially went there for a baby luau in Hilo town, but convinced my lovely girlfriend to let me slip over to B.J. Penn's academy.

B.J. is on the mainland in California training for his fight with Kenny Florian (go B.J.!)..so one of his brown belts (Chris Henriques) is teaching his classes. His jiu-jitsu is really sick, and he had us drilling some killer X-guard techniques!

F.Y.I...these boyz in Hilo are monsters!...they start sparring and end sparring!
Everyone was SUPER_COOL and DA BOYZ even took my girl and I out for a night on tha town! We went to a few bars and there were some locals singing their hearts out (karaoke)...B.J.s brother Reagan was cruising with us and a few other MMAers!..gotta send shouts out to Chris and Robby (crazy englishman)...By the way, everyone needs to check out the BIG ISLAND...Kalapana!!...oops!

THE FINEST EXPRESSION OF GRACIE JIU-JITSU

This video clip has stayed one of my favorites over time (for obvious reasons)...beginning with some of the Self-Defense techniques, it evolves into an encyclopedia of movements that have captivated the mixed martial arts world in addition to setting the bar for jiu-jitsu practitioners who someday wish their game to emulate the BEST (Rickson Gracie/Royler Gracie)...This arena is packed during this demonstration!..and you could hear a pin drop at the same time..GO TRAIN!

Technique#2 Omoplata Sweep from Guard

This is one of my favorite (gi) sweeps when an opponent is attempting to pass my guard by standing and backing out...has to be performed quickly to avoid it being detected. However, you end up in a great position...can either settle in the mount...or hit a rolling triangle like I would:)...DRILL IT!!!

Technique#1 Michael Jackson Triangle

This is an open guard movement to bait a pass and achieve a submission..via triangle choke...learned this variation from Aparecido Faria(Gracie Barra Black belt..2time World Champion)...DRILL IT!

First clip is a broken-down,step-by-step version..

second clip is straight through..

Jiu-jitsu fluidity

Yeah boyz(and girlz),
This is a clip of Braulio Estima(super-pimp)playing around with some other jiu-jitsu practitioners after a seminar. He's got a super-sick style and technique!!
But, foremost you will notice his calm, flowy approach to applying his submissions in a more relaxed setting.(rather than a world championship tournament)

Jiu-jitsu/Ocean Lifestyle in da islands

Basically, I live in paradise(Hawaii), and all I do is surf, teach and train jiu-jitsu, maintain my organic garden, and cruise. Hawaii is a great place to do all of these activities. Purple belt in Gracie Jiu-jitsu(Royler Gracie Associaton), Ive had more than my share of challenge matches. All of which have ended by submission(the opponents). In this blog, I plan to show AND talk about the various techniques I rely on. Keep checking my blog to see how we do it in the islands!!!!!!!!!!
