KALANI DAVID SHREDDING THE PARK UP IN COUNTRY

Very seldom do we here at Island Jiu-jitsu feature a non jiu-jitsu related star. However, when it comes to Kalani David, a kid I used to bicycle around in Costa Rica with during his early childhood, he most definitely fits the criteria!
The David Family has always been a home away from home for me, even as Kalani was just coming into the world. It continues to be an amazing ride to watch his progress in to the forefront of surfing and skateboarding (dont forget motorcross!)...and MOST AMAZING to see the groms looking to him for encouragement...YOU ARE THE MAN KALANI...love Uncle J-Bay :)

World's Elite Grapplers Come To Hawaii!!!....

One thing is for sure, Brazilian Jiu-jitsu is a very popular sport out here in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. Ever since Relson Gracie came to Oahu back in the 80's, grappling has made it's way into alot of people's hearts. Today is no different.
Many different teams and flags are flown here nowadays, and we can all be stoked that some of today's top athletes are visiting the islands. For the last years, there has been some what of a domination in the lightweight catagories, and it is that domination of Rafael and Guilherme Mendes!
We should all be super-stoked to have the opportunity to be able to train with them!..Yes, alot of their positions are "cutting edge", but we can be sure that these positions were only constructed after having a stellar grasp on all things basic in Gracie Jiu-jitsu. To be able to mix it up with some of the world's best who travel the globe preaching the gospel of BJJ is a reality in December!!!..FOR THE LOVE OF THE SPORT

Jason Vigil vs Pono Pananganan (brown belt open) Triple Crown of Jiu-jitsu

Well...there were only four(4) brown belt competitors overall at the Triple Crown, and we all got thrown together regardless of our weight. I just so happened to draw the reigning, defending brown belt champion for the last 5 years!..He is the head instructor at Kauai Technical Institution in Lihue, Kauai, and has been training over 15 years. Let it be known that it was an honor to get on the mat with him. Whatevz...had my brown for a week when we met at the Triple Crown..I should have fought for my guard (one of my strengths) after he nullified my de la riva, but I made the mistake of turning away...UGH!!!..great job Pono..

Xande Ribiero seminar (Gracie Humaita Hawaii)

All I have to say about Xande Ribiero is that meeting him was a very humbling experience...his technique is invisible. He picked apart the De La Riva guard, showed everyone in attendance the proper way to side mount (thought I knew that already!), and a few other things that you would have had to be there for...haha!!!

As you can see there was a nice list of names in attendance to witness Xande's technical breakdown (Kai Garcia, Leif, Eric Goo, Kerry, and Rylan Lizares-not in photo)
