Island Jiu-jitsu's Video Favorites

This is a highlight video of Rubens Charles (an absolute bad-ass). His style is super technical and tournament oriented. I would love to see him venture into the MMA world as some of his fellow competitors have.(Andre Galvao, Roger Gracie, and Demian Maia to mention a few)..One has to appreciate the beauty of our chosen art when executed with this level of precision..Stay tuned for more vids and discussions. Also, feel free to check out our fanpage on Facebook and Islandjits on Youtube..GO TRAIN..ALOHA!

Promotion Night : Gracie Kailua

Last night at class (GRACIE KAILUA) there were well-deserved promotions given by my insructor and friend Jason Izaguirre (Royler Gracie black belt). A solid number of blue belts were given, as well as degrees on both white and blue belts. In addition, I recieved a degree on my purple belt. But the highlight of the evening definetly went to Daniel Espinoza who got his brown belt! He is well worthy of it (yeah D)

Andre Galvao...the next Rickson??

When thinking of Gracie Jiu-jitsu dominating in mixed martial arts, one can think back to the days of Royce Gracie in the UFC. As well as the UNDEFEATED RICKSON GRACIE throughout his fighting career in Japan and on the mats of the world. Since then, there have been many practitioners that have proven the effectiveness of this discipline.

Another great example would be local boy and "Phenom" BJ PENN! However, after viewing this fight between Andre Galvao and John Alessio I feel as if we are embarking on another one of those special rides. Alessio, who is an excellent striker with solid wrestling and definetly training jiu-jitsu, was to be a gnarly test for the brazilian jiu-jitsu world champion.

What really got me stoked was the fact that I've been watching this guy the past few years in the Pan-American Championships, the Worlds, and every 101 Submissions video to date. This clip is the second half of the fight, and to see the first half simply check it on youtube. The first minutes involved them feeling each other out on their feet, but that didn't last too long as Galvao positions himself behind Alessio as he wanted to hold the ropes.

Starting with this clip you will see a perfect display of jiu-jitsu finishing a well seasoned opponent...I thought for sure he was gonna choke him from the body triangle..TOP LEVEL AS IT GETS!!

Arm-lock to Triangle choke set-up

This short video basically describes how one can transition from a failed arm-lock to a triangle... or simply how to set your opponent up for failure:) The details here are to have the proper ankle on bottom during the transition into triangle, and achieving the desired angle to finish da choke!
